De oude uitmonstering van Finlaggan Cask Strength gaat nog vergezeld van de ondertitel The Original Peaty. Finlaggan Islay Single Malt heeft het karakter van de echte Islay whisky's, rijk van smaak, zacht met turf. Jim Murray schreef over deze Finlaggan in zijn Whisky Bible (94 punten): "If you don't get a bottle of this, you'll regret it for the rest of your life". Ook Serge Valentin was zeer enthousiast.

Finlaggan Islay Single Malt is een malt whisky afkomstig van een Islay distilleerderij waarvan de naam geheim wordt gehouden. De naam Finlaggan is afkomstig van het in Islay gelegen Loch Finlaggan. In het meer liggen twee eilanden die belangrijk waren voor de Schotse historie, Eilan Mor (groot eiland) en Eilan na Comheirle (eiland van bestuur). Hier werd namelijk de Clan Macdonald, de grootste en belangrijkste van Schotland, geïnstalleerd als Lords of the Isles. Hun bewind duurde tot 1493, nadien nam koning James IV de zeggenschap over. Finlaggan wordt gebotteld door de Vintage Malt Whisky Company. De firma werd in 1992 opgericht en is naast Finlaggan ook eigenaar van de merken The Ileach, Islay Storm en Cooper’s Choice.

Tastingnotes Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com, 88 punten: Finlaggan 'Old Reserve Cask Strength' (58%, Vintage Malt Whisky Company, +/-2008) Single malt. It’s always been rumoured that Finlaggan came from an Islay distillery that started with an L and did not end with a G. Colour: straw. Nose: both closer to the grain and closer to garden fruits than all the other ones, and then rather sootier, with also whiffs of tarmac. More austere, more discreet and maybe also more elegant, in some way. Nice notes of fresh walnuts and almonds after a few minutes. Mouth: good, no medicinal notes here and rather little brine, rather more overripe apples, liquorice, leather and tobacco. A great feeling of fullness. Finish: long, ashy, smoky, with a lemony and salty signature. Comments: it’s definitely not impossible that this malt came from that distillery. One of the best bang for your buck peaters out there in my opinion (it’s very cheap!) SGP:447 - 88 points.
